I'm going to answer this one honestly, because it deserves honesty.
Porn is a substitute. It's a substitute for connection, for intimacy, for the vulnerability and risk that real sex requires. And it works — temporarily, mechanically — without requiring anything of you. No vulnerability. No risk. No performance anxiety. No possibility of rejection.
That's the appeal. It's not primarily about lust. It's about safety. Porn gives you the experience of sexual gratification without the cost of being known. And for a lot of men, being known is the scariest thing in the world.
I'm not going to moralize about this. Shame doesn't help — it makes it worse, because shame sends you right back to the very thing you're ashamed of. But I will say this: a man who substitutes porn for intimacy is a man who's choosing a simulation of connection over the real thing. And the more he chooses the simulation, the harder the real thing becomes.
The way out isn't willpower. It's honesty. It's asking: what am I actually looking for? What need am I trying to meet? And can I find the courage to pursue the real thing — with all its risk, all its vulnerability, all its uncertainty — instead of the safe, dead version?
That's hard work. But it's the work that actually changes things.
